Dermal Fillers - Questions & Answers

What is the origin of the products used (natural or synthetic)?
All sorts of materials can be used including collagen from animal and human source. The most popular material used, is synthetically derived hyaluronic acid (HA) such as products like Restylane, Hydrafill etc.

Is skin testing required?
For collagen, you will need a skin 'patch test' which if inderminate, may have to be repeated before treatment is started. For all synthetic fillers, a skin test is not normally required but in rare circumstances, your practitioner may advise you to have a test if appropriate.

How long will the filler last?
How long the treatment lasts is very individual. This depends on many factors, such as your skin type, age, life style, muscle activity and also on the injection technique. Collagen is the shortest lasting filler (3-4 months), HA based fillers can last between 6-12 months, depending on the area injected.

Can i be allergic to it?
1 in 2000 treated patients has experienced localised reactions thought to be of an allergic nature.
